To be honest, their relationship, despite having a good start, had a fragile foundation. But their relationship progressed too quickly. They started dating in the middle of Season 4. He and Emily had only been dating for six weeks, but he wants Emily to stay where he is so he had the bright idea of marrying her, despite their short courtship.
Originally, Ross asked her to move in with him. Ross tells her that she could just get a job in the US since he has heard of foreigners stealing jobs from Americans what a great way to put it.
Ross flat out says no because his son is in the US. Then Emily just put out a hypothetical situation; she said that moving in would have made sense if they were getting married. For him, maybe. Emily, caught up in the moment of romance, said yes. But most of the best things in life take time. Plus, time gives you more opportunities to settle baggage that may affect your relationship.
With Emily, Ross wanted to marry her even though he had unresolved issues with his previous romance. This had chaotic consequences at his wedding. As a result, they argued a lot and tried to make each other jealous. As he was saying his vows to Emily, he saw Rachel and it brought back his old and true feelings.
Poor Emily. Even before Ross and Rachel dated, the former was already possessive of the latter. Ross always had a sense of ownership over Rachel. So, if you want to get divorced, disregard the thoughts, autonomy and aspirations of your partner and think of them as yours instead — kind of like what Ross did to Rachel. Since he firmly believed they were meant together, he thought it was OK to walk over her. As a friend, Ross consoles her, but he had underlying intentions. On their wedding day, during the vows, he accidentally said Rachel's name instead of Emily's.
Kinda hard to explain that one. It worked out for the best because he realized that she wasn't the one. If she was, she wouldn't have kept him from seeing his friends. They say three's the charm, but in Ross' case - not so much. His third wedding definitely takes the cake for being the funniest.
After getting completely smashed in their hotel room in Vegas, Ross and Rachel go out for a night on the town. After hitting the casinos they eventually end up at one of those hour quickie-wedding chapels. In their drunken stupor they decided it would be cool to go in and get hitched.
Chandler and Monica see them practically fall out of the chapel doors and immediately told the rest of the gang. Emily is willing to forgive Ross at the last minute until she sees him almost boarding a plane to their honeymoon destination in Greece with Rachel by his side. Later in the series, Ross finds out Emily is getting married and on the eve of her wedding, she calls Ross and leaves a voice message, where she confesses she wonders if they gave up on their relationship too quickly.
However, Rachel was able to convince Ross to not call Emily back, due to how much suffering she put him through. Ross, later realising he would be divorced three-time, lied to Rachel, telling her he had taken care of the annulment when he had not. Rachel soon found out that she was still legally married to Ross and stormed into his NYU classroom shouting and screaming at him about being his wife.
Before Ross goes to hand in the divorce papers, they both agreed that if they really got married, their marriage would be the one that would last forever. Thankfully, Rachel and Ross were able to make their way back to each other by season 10 and who knows, if Friends was ever to have a revival, maybe Ross and Rachel would be husband and wife.
