The Navigation Department is also responsible for executing all military traditions, customs and honors onboard ship. Intelligence, photographic intelligence, local air traffic control, and missile system maintenance are types of services provided by this department. As a reserve intelligence officer or enlisted Intelligence Specialist, you most likely will be assigned to this department during your AT-at-Sea.

The embarked aircraft squadrons retain their corporate identity and basic organization, but each squadron also supplies specific personnel, such as ship mess cooks, stewards, and laundry, to various departments listed above. The top levels of the island are safe enough, but sensitive operations and limited space means you can't have a lot of people coming and going. A sailor who works below deck might go for weeks without ever seeing daylight.
Throughout the ship, conditions are much more cramped than in a normal city. To get from place to place, personnel have to scale nearly vertical steps and squeeze past each other in narrow corridors. The berthing compartments sleeping quarters are extremely tight. Enlisted personnel share a compartment with about 60 other people, all sleeping in single bunks, generally called racks , crammed together in stacks of three.
Each person gets a small stowage bin and upright locker for clothes and personal belongings, and everybody in the compartment shares a bathroom and a small common area with a television hooked up to one of the carrier's satellite dishes. Officers enjoy more space and finer furnishings, but their space is limited, too.
Everybody onboard has to get used to tight quarters. Formerly a Soviet ship used for anti-submarine warfare, Vikramaditya was fitted with an angled flight deck, given a degree ski jump, and extensively modernized. Australia has a long tradition of operating aircraft carriers, from seaplane carriers of the s to the last full-deck Australian carrier, HMAS Melbourne , which retired in After a three-decade hiatus, the Canberra -class amphibious ships mark the return of Australian carrier aviation.
The Canberra class is designed to carry amphibious troops, and to that end, the vessels have a full-length flight deck, hangar, and elevators to move aircraft back and forth between the two. The Juan Carlos -class was built to accommodate vertical takeoff and landing fighters.
However, the Australian government has downplayed the possibility of Fs operating from the decks of these twin carriers. The Cavour pictured is one of a pair of Italian carriers; the other is the Giuseppe Garabaldi. Cavour is feet long and displaces 27, tons, while the smaller Garabaldi is feet long and displaces just 13, tons.
Both are conventionally powered, using General Electric LM gas turbine engines for propulsion. Cavour and Garabaldi are equipped with Harrier fighters and helicopters. Both carriers can send 12 helicopters or 10 Harriers into action, but only Cavour features a degree angle ski ramp to assist Harriers on takeoffs.
