Firehawks were also a similar, but different bird. Total Firebird production was flat the following year, but WS6 sales were up to just under Most were Trans Am coupes, while Pontiac sold about Formula coupes and around 40 Formula convertibles. Despite the new LS V-8 Firebird, sales were flat again, and WS6 sales were down to about cars, with the vast majority being Trans Am coupes with the mix of manuals to automatics being about even. Fewer than WS6 Formulas were sold.
This numbers story continued essentially unchanged until Word was out that the Firebird was about to get shot down and there was a run on WS6 Trans Ams, with more than sold. In addition, the last WS6 Formulas were sold—fewer than of them. The next year Pontiac moved about WS6 Trans Ams, and in the final year of production sales exploded to almost 15,, or nearly half of all Firebird sales. We should also mention the production numbers of the 30th Anniversary Edition Trans Am, which all received the WS6 package.
Pontiac built a little more than coupes, about 60 percent of which got the six-speed. There were also about convertibles, mostly automatics. In , production of the Collectors Edition added up to about units, with a fairly even split between coupes and convertibles. Again, about 60 percent got the six-speed. Watch out for clones or replicas. One of the codes listed should be WS6.
If the sticker is missing, the car has probably been painted or has had the door replaced due to damage. Look for rust in the usual places, like behind the rear tires at the bottom of the quarter panels. And be sure to check the floor plan and in the trunk, especially on T-Top cars. Often these panels pull loose from the bottom and flap in the wind.
These cars had popup headlights and they are prone to fail, staying either up or down. Also the power window mechanisms are known to fail over time and the taillights can take on water and turn dark. Also, the two body styles have equal interior space. With the introduction of the LS engine, the WS6 package understandably gained more power.
Also, in , a new camshaft and the LS6 intake from Z06 Corvette were added to the Firebird models thereby increasing total output by 5 horsepower. The engines were optionally mated to either a four-speed automatic transmission or a Borg-Warner six-speed manual. Furthermore, the amazing Firebird WS6 adopted a double-wishbone front suspension and a conventional live-axle setup in the rear. The package had an obvious effect on the car's performance, aided by added features which include larger tires, wider wheels, and a thicker rear sway bar.
Also in the same year, the WS6 package was offered on the Firebird Formula. The WS6 package ultimately improves the performance of the Firebird and as such requires a commensurate powerful means of bringing the car to a halt. Hence, the car adopted four-wheel disc brakes with ABS as standard features while traction control was optionally available. For a more efficient cruise, the WS6 package also adopted a power steering cooler and for proper road grip, it uses well threaded Goodyear F1 GS tires wrapped around specially built inch aluminum wheels.
The interior of the Firebird WS6 had a mixed reception. However, with the premium WS6 model , the car offered a strong array of standard equipment. This paint job is accented by the black, five-spoke wheels, but what really sets this package apart are the iconic screaming chicken decals and badges. Inside, the all-black interior gets the Collector Edition logo embroidered on the front headrests, and it also gets period-specific upgrades such as a disc CD changer and a Passport radar detector.
While the paint and limited production made this car an instant collectible, the best part about the Pontiac Trans Am Collector Edition is the standard WS6 package adding the 5. A six-speed manual transmission was offered on these cars, but this one uses the four-speed automatic. Everywhere you look on this Trans Am, the car is clean and flawless thanks to proper care and an odometer that shows just over 7, original miles.
